The triumphal arch of Paris, everyone sees what it looks like, right?

But if you’re asked what the high relief on the right foot of the Arc de Triomphe is, it gets more complicated, doesn’t it?

This is the Departure of the Volunteers of 1792, commonly called the Marseillaise, which represents the allegory of victory by a winged figure.

The sculptor is the famous François Rude (1784-1855). In the museum that bears his name we can discover the casting of this Departure of the Volunteers of 1792 but also other casts of the Dijon artist.

In an old church, this visit will take you 15 minutes but it is not to be missed!
